There is a meeting at this time with Chancellor Blumenthal and student media that occurs once a quarter.
Live updates…
Budget
1/3 cuts come out of academic divisions
2/3 cuts come out of non academic support services…
UC California was 7 pervcent of budget, now it is 3.5 percent of the budget
40% less money per student than in the 1970′s.
KZSC: How do you decide which project and contracts do you decide to allocate funding to first?
Chancellor: Buildings- Buildings that state pays for and buildings that private pays for. Students pay for housing, separate piece of funding. Buildings justified on the basis of enrollment are funded only after enrollment is there. Upcoming projects that may not be completed include… State stopped funding for all bond projects including digital arts and new media building, all but 300,000 were allocated, second project is the henry seismic project, plus the addition of some additional space at mchenry- was 33 million short. Decided to continue with the project, as planned to put some money into it anyway, and now funding is starting again. It will be completed. The biomedical project is the third. This is awkward… having money from california institute of regeneration- stem cell people… want to build fourth story. Hoping that money will flow again soon. Several projects put forward for funding, with hope that stimulus package will help. Aggressive going after medical research projects. On term of other projects, being very aggressive on other projects. Multi campus research is something they will go forward on as well. Our campus made twice as many proposals for this money as you may have expected for our size. Probably will get fair chunk of funds.
CHP: Discuss special election budget funds…
Chancellor: Regents support prop 1A. Prop 1A has future spending cuts that could adversely effect US in long run. Has been supported by Dem and Rep, but has been opposed as well… Troubling that the budget for the University of California seems to be held u and facing cut after cut.
KZSC: Please respond to the potential firing of Susan Jonas and Guillermo Delgado in the LALS department.

KZSC: With increased student fees and increased student tuition, where will that money be going?
Chanc: Not all of increased fees go towards Santa Cruz… something betwen 20-30 percent of fees santa cruz students pay, go to other schools. The two big schools are UCSF and UCLA… continued in AUDIO
