Students, faculty, and workers across the state protested budget cuts, tuition hikes, job cuts, and a myriad of other budget related issues centered around the management of the public education system.

At UC Santa Cruz, protesters effectively shut down the campus, blocking both entrances to traffic, starting at 4:30 A.M. Throughout the day they stayed at both the West and East entrances prohibiting people from going onto campus. They also blocked the bike path, as well as tried to prevent workers walking onto campus up through Pogonip.

Throughout the day the UC sent out e-mails warning commuters of the possible danger they might face if they tried to get on to campus. One of the e-mails stated that students were armed with knives and clubs, but instances of such weapons being brandished were denied by students.

Earlier this morning, protest activity at both campus entrances rendered our main campus inaccessible to vehicle traffic. Reports of protesters carrying clubs and knives, smashing a car windshield with a metal pipe, denying a resident of faculty/student housing the right to exit the campus, and keeping a campus health care worker from getting to work, escalated this morning's protest into behavior that is disruptive, intimidating and destructive.
Some of the other actions mentioned by the e-mail were also denied, but the smashing of a car windshield after the car supposedly ran over a students foot, was confirmed.</itunes:summary>

Organizers of the rally, members of the African/Black Student Alliance, marched fifty protestors to Kerr Hall, where Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs came out to hear and respond to student's grievances.

In their show of solidarity with the Black students across the UC system, members of ABSA described the "covert racism" they experience at UCSC in the forms of racial humor published in Fish Rap Live!, the failure to recruit and retain Black staff and faculty, and the lack of an African American Studies program.

Correction: Fishrap Live! is NOT a student media funded publication. This is statement by Erin Schmalfeld, the Editor-in-Chief of the paper. "Although The Fish Rap Live! is supported by Student Media in that we use their facilities and have access to advising, the money required to create Fish Rap comes from staff donations, advertising, and student presentations made to college senates. All of this funding comes from or is sought by UCSC students on staff, not the UCSC community at large. While we are thankful for the support we receive from Student Media, the statement that The Fish Rap Live! is supported by student registration fees is false."</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Are you feeling like your campus has gotten a little cramped lately? That's probably because our current Sophomore and Junior classes are the largest in UCSC history. Yet, in the midst of massive budget reductions, how can the university be allowing in more students? According to William Ladusaw, Dean of Undergraduate Education, these massive classes were a problem before our budget was reduced, and, ironically, the cuts themselves may have helped draw more students into enrollment. Enrollment at the UC works like planning a party, Ladusaw explains, where you send out more invitations than you expect will arrive. In 2007 much more students enrolled than were expected, and in 2008, when the economy went into a recession, prospective freshmen were told that that the UC was cutting admissions. What resulted was a whiplash effect: more freshmen enrolled than in the previous year, and thus there is an"enrollment bulge" in our current Sophomore and Junior undergraduate classes.</itunes:summary>
